Pattern Recognition Reading

I come home yesterday to find my house tagged.

Nono, I don't mean some kind of gang symbol spraypainted on the side of my house. I mean Pamela and Jacob had gone around the house and put 4x5 cards on everything with its name on it. "Door" "Television" "Picture" "Frame" "Knob" "Mirror" "Closet" etc .. you get the drift.

So, I quizzed him, and of course he could point at the words and say what they were. I'm going to leave them up for a few days, then take them all down and see if he can tell me what the words are ..

A few weeks ago I had bought him a 'Max and Ruby' book, that had flashcards in the back relating to the story. We cut them out and he'd bop right through them telling me what the words were. I thought he was cheating, looking at the paper and seeing the pictures on the other side. So I wrote them on a piece of paper and he was still able to tell me what the words were. hmmm ... maybe he's beginning to read ..

Pamela said last night they went through one of his 'Nate the great' books and he was obsessed with finding every instance of the word 'stamp'.

Funny thing is, he doesn't sound out the words, he just looks at the word and knows what it is. I guess you call it 'Pattern Recognition'. Kinda like the way most adults read. You know the pattern R-E-A-D means elephant nonono I mean READ. Wow, I am typing one thing and thinking another .. I don't even knwo where elephant came from. Gotta stop drinking those triple espresso mocha lattes for lunch.

Nice link on Pattern Recognition reading.
